About the foundation

Who we are

The Urology Foundation of Trinidad and Tobago is a specialist medical centre established to address the burden of urological disease across the country. We operate from Newtown Medical Centre in the heart of Port of Spain, providing specialist urological care to men, women and children from across Trinidad and, through dedicated outreach, to Tobago as well.

Trinidad and Tobago has one of the highest rates of prostate cancer in the Caribbean. Research by Dr. Alan Patrick has documented a particularly elevated incidence in Tobago, which makes targeted, sustained intervention not merely valuable but urgent.

We combine clinical care with community education, radio outreach, corporate screening partnerships and international research collaboration, to deliver urological health across the twin islands.

What we offer

Tobago outreach

We bring urology to Tobago through quarterly mobile screening missions and, from Year 3, a permanent satellite clinic in Scarborough, responding to the island's documented high prostate cancer incidence.

Clinical focus

Prostate disease, cancers of the urinary tract, and laser surgery for stones and enlarged prostates.

Dr. Joel Leach is on the medical register of the Medical Board of Trinidad and Tobago in the urology specialty. He trained at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, and did specialist residency at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, with urology posts in the South-West Regional Health Authority. He treats prostate cancer and enlarged prostates, kidney stones, and bladder and urinary problems. His work on catching prostate disease early is what shapes how the Foundation runs its screening clinics and its visits to Tobago.

Reconstructive urology, children's urological surgery, and general adult urology.

Dr. Vinod Bandoo works across reconstructive urology, children's urology and general adult urology. His surgical work includes hypospadias and phimosis in children, and erectile dysfunction and bladder problems in adults. He sees patients at Newtown Medical Centre by appointment.

What we are working towards

Sixteen urological conditions treated, in men, women and children. The Foundation was set up in 2025, and the aim over its first five years is to screen more than ten thousand people across both islands, and to move from quarterly visits to Tobago to a permanent clinic there. Those last two are targets, not results, and we will publish what we actually reach.
